Sonic and his friends have banded together with leading RPG developer BioWare (Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) to create a stylish blend of strategy and speed for Sonic’s first RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood™. Exclusively for the Nintendo DS™, Sonic Chronicles mixes a rich story, hand-painted visuals, fast-paced team combat, and wireless collectible trading into a uniquely compelling adventure.

Players will customize their party and characters, choosing from Sonic, Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, and more, and prepare to defeat a menacing new enemy. Rhythmically tapping and dragging with the stylus in Sonic-style battles, players can level up and use Rings to buy new special attacks as they progress through 20 different and beautifully hand-drawn areas including new and classic Sonic locales. With an engaging storyline, lightning fast attacks, high production values, and impeccable visuals, Sonic Chronicles allows gamers to experience Sonic in a whole new way.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai said in a Q&A on the official SSBB website that the Wii installment of the series will stress “easiness” over the small details of combat, to help make the game easier to play for newcomers.

The ‘Brawl director also touched on the game’s character line-up, noting that it hasn’t been finalised yet. Sakurai said that the reveal of Solid Snake means that they’re contemplating adding one or two more non-Nintendo fighters to the game, but he notes that the characters must have appeared on Nintendo systems at some point to be considered.

Even though an online mode was already confirmed by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata at E3 2005, Sakurai isn’t as quick to champion the now year-old announcement. The ‘Brawl team are apparently looking into the feature and hope to include online play in time for the game’s 2007 release, but we’re told there are currently no plans for leader boards or the like.

Sakurai doesn’t want to put a lot of Japanese specific characters in the game, seeing that the Smash Bros. series is popular worldwide. There still may be room for some specific characters, but you won’t see them taking over the game.

Sakurai also mentioned a possible Nintendo DS entry in the Smash Bros. series. While he said there’s nothing in development at the moment, he didn’t rule out a stylus-waving Smash Bros. for the future.

You can take your finger off the panic button; the world as you know it is still sane. Capcom has announced that, yes, there will be a Mega Man game this year. The sun will also rise in the east tomorrow, gas prices will keep rising, and your heart will continue pumping blood to the rest of your body for the foreseeable future.

The latest iteration of the long-running and many-sequeled franchise is Mega Man Star Force 2, the follow-up to last year's DS battling RPG. Star Force was of course the successor to the surprisingly popular Battle Network games for GBA, retaining much of the same gameplay with a few differences both cosmetic and substantial. While the series retained its predecessor's dual-world design -- players controlled a flesh-and-blood kid who occasionally jacked-in to the Internet to guide his sentient avatar Mega Man through a variety of conflicts -- it also boasted a new, 3D perspective on combat. More significantly, it also added some innovations in connectivity. Like many collect-em-all type games, Star Force came in multiple versions... but by interacting with friends who owned other editions of the game, players could experience the entire adventure regardless of the version they used. As many Sonic fans probably already know, our favorite blue hedgehog is featured front row center on the February Nintendo Power cover! For those that aren’t aware, the article features Sonic and his new adventures in the upcoming role-playing game from BioWare for the Nintendo DS, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. To help get fans excited, both SEGA and BioWare have released teaser pages promoting the Nintendo Power release:

If you haven’t picked up the Nintendo Power article yet, I recommend checking it out. The seven-page piece features a ton of information about The Dark Brotherhood game, and even has an interview with BioWare co-founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk. If words don’t move you, then you’ll be happy to know that there are several exclusive screenshots and a few concept art releases as well.

I personally cannot wait to get my hands on this game and see what BioWare has in mind for our little blue friend. I’m a huge fan of BioWare games, RPGs (especially handheld), and Sonic, so I think it’s pretty much a surefire hit.
